MGM’s Dubai Sphere: A Middle Eastern Version of Las Vegas' Iconic Attraction

In a thrilling update for Dubai’s entertainment landscape, MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle recently revealed plans to develop the Dubai Sphere, a project that will bring a Middle Eastern version of Las Vegas' iconic Sphere to the heart of the UAE’s most glamorous city. The announcement, made at the Skift Global Forum on September 19, 2023, provides a clearer picture of the company’s mega-project, The Island, which aims to redefine Dubai's tourism and hospitality scene.

Set against the backdrop of a massive $2.5 billion investment, The Island is already making waves with its promise of luxurious hotels, including versions of the famous MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria, adding up to 1,400 rooms to the city’s ever-growing hospitality offerings. Now, with the introduction of the Dubai Sphere, MGM is adding yet another element of spectacle that is sure to become a must-visit attraction for tourists and locals alike.

What is the Dubai Sphere?

For those unfamiliar with the original Sphere in Las Vegas, it’s a futuristic, 360-degree venue designed to push the boundaries of immersive entertainment. With a striking exterior and a fully customizable interior, the Las Vegas Sphere is expected to host concerts, shows, and other events that offer an unparalleled experience. The Dubai Sphere will follow a similar blueprint but with a unique Middle Eastern twist.

Hornbuckle revealed that while the Dubai Sphere will be slightly smaller, standing at 110 meters tall compared to its Las Vegas counterpart, it will still pack a punch. With a seating capacity of 300, this venue will offer a more intimate setting than the Vegas version, but it will remain a cutting-edge piece of architecture and a symbol of innovation. The venue will be centrally located within The Island and will be designed to showcase the rich history of Dubai, blending modern technology with the city’s storied past.

While MGM Resorts is developing the Dubai Sphere, it will not be affiliated with Sphere Entertainment, which operates the Las Vegas venue. Instead, the Dubai Sphere will reflect MGM’s commitment to crafting a space that fuses world-class entertainment with Dubai’s unique cultural identity.

Construction Progress and Timeline

Since the project was first announced in 2017, there has been plenty of anticipation surrounding its development. Last November (2023), a significant milestone was reached when the construction contract for the project was awarded, signaling that the dream was starting to take shape. While no official opening date has been confirmed, it’s expected that the Dubai Sphere will open alongside the completion of The Island, which is set to redefine Dubai’s skyline.

The development of The Island has already drawn attention for its ambitious scale, with its luxury hotels and world-class amenities set to transform Dubai’s hospitality scene. But with the addition of the Sphere, the project is now poised to elevate Dubai’s reputation as a global entertainment hub.

Non-Gaming, but Still a Big Draw

One key aspect of the Dubai Sphere and The Island is that the entire project will remain a “non-gaming complex” for now. Despite MGM’s vast experience in casino resorts, Hornbuckle confirmed that the Dubai venture has not received approval for a casino, meaning there will be no gaming facilities at the resort in the foreseeable future.

For MGM, this represents a shift from their usual formula. The company has applied for a gaming license in Abu Dhabi, but for now, The Island and the Dubai Sphere will operate within the UAE’s current legal framework, which limits gaming activities.

Interestingly, while the Dubai project remains non-gaming, the Wynn Marjan resort in Ras Al Khaimah—scheduled to open in 2027—has already secured a gaming license, becoming the first licensed gaming venue in the UAE.

A Bold Step into the Future

MGM’s Dubai Sphere is a testament to the UAE’s willingness to embrace innovative projects that draw inspiration from global entertainment trends while adding a distinctly local flavor. With its promise of immersive experiences and cutting-edge technology, the Dubai Sphere is sure to be a centerpiece of The Island, offering a space where history, culture, and technology collide in a truly spectacular way.

As construction progresses and more details emerge, all eyes will be on this high-tech marvel, as it becomes one of Dubai's most talked-about attractions in the years to come.
