Terminal 2, which was built some 40 years ago by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), will undergo some significant changes. Planned upgrades include the installation of India’s first autonomous docking aerobridges, modernised ceilings with skylights, advanced flooring, and improved road connectivity.
These changes are part of an effort to position IGIA as a leading aviation hub in India and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, one of the airport's runways will also be temporarily closed to facilitate additional development work.
Delhi Airport’s Terminal 2 to Close for Major Upgrades; Passengers to Shift to T1
IGIA Set for Expansion to Meet Growing Air Traffic Demands
New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), one of the busiest airports in India, is set to undergo a major infrastructure revamp as authorities prepare to temporarily close Terminal 2 (T2) from April 2025 for extensive upgrades. This move is part of a broader plan to modernize the airport, enhance passenger experience, and accommodate rising air traffic.
T2 Closure and Passenger Shift to T1
During the upgrade process, operations at T2, which currently handles around 15 million passengers annually, will be completely shifted to Terminal 1 (T1). Authorities have assured that T1 will be fully operational by March 15, 2025, after completing its own expansion. This strategic shift is designed to ensure minimal disruption to flight schedules and passenger convenience.
What Changes Can Passengers Expect?
1. T1 to Handle Increased Traffic
With T2 shutting down temporarily, all domestic flights operating from T2 will be reassigned to T1. Airlines and passengers will be notified about their new departure and arrival points in advance.
2. Terminal 3 Adjustments for International Flights
To balance the load, a portion of Terminal 3 (T3), which currently caters to domestic and international flights, will be reallocated for more international operations. This move is intended to accommodate the rising number of global travelers using IGIA.
3. Runway Upgrades to Improve Efficiency
One of IGIA’s four runways will undergo a major upgrade, including enhancements to the Instrument Landing System (ILS) to make it CAT III B compliant. This will improve flight operations during Delhi’s notorious winter fog, reducing delays and ensuring smoother take-offs and landings.
Massive Investment in IGIA’s Expansion
The temporary closure of T2 is part of a ₹12,500 crore master plan aimed at transforming IGIA into a world-class aviation hub. The airport's current capacity of 70 million passengers annually is expected to increase significantly post-upgrades, meeting future demands efficiently.
How Will This Impact Travelers?
Passengers flying from Delhi should take note of the following:
Verify flight details before departure as airlines will be shifting operations from T2 to T1.
Arrive early at the airport to adjust to new check-in counters and security screening procedures.
Look for airline notifications regarding gate changes, as T1 is expected to handle a surge in passengers.
Future of IGIA: A Bigger and More Efficient Airport
Once completed, the upgraded T2 will feature better infrastructure, enhanced passenger amenities, and faster processing times, making air travel smoother for millions of domestic and international passengers.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates IGIA, has assured that the transition will be carried out with minimal inconvenience to travelers. Airlines and airport staff will be on high alert to manage the operational shift efficiently.
This marks a significant step in India’s aviation growth story, reinforcing Delhi’s position as one of the leading global aviation hubs.
